I like the smell of the Earth, the sound of the Waves, the sight of the Trees and the emotions I feel when around nature. All of which I hope to convey in my paintings. I consider myself a thalassophile and love to paint the sea.
I often paint intuitively - no plans, no sketches, just a need to put paint on canvas.
I work in varied colour palettes but always striving to show light and shade within that context. I want my work to be calming with a sense of tranquillity, but often veer into the intense drama of our Scottish skies and weather.
I graduated from The Scottish College of Textiles in Galashiels in 1984 with a BA Hons in Design with Business Management. My career inevitably followed the business side and for many years I used my creativity to coach Managers on how to be better leaders.
In 2018, redundancy forced me to take stock and I made a life-changing decision to return to my first love and create art. I work from my full- time studio on the shores of the Firth of Forth in Prestonpans, East Lothian. I like to think of my art as being good for the soul, especially my own.
